**ALL OUR SUMMER CAMPS ARE NOW BEING TAUGHT ONLINE**
(Younger students who are interested in self-reflection and current events are welcome at their guardian’s discretion. Middle-grade reading list.)
Everyday we see media that is intended to entertain us and sell us products, including graphic novels and comics. But what if your comic wasn’t ever meant to be seen and judged as an art piece for someone else's consumption?
Many professional comic artists keep “diary comics” which they sometimes eventually share, or use for inspiration when they are creating their professional works. Sometimes these diary comics end up being the basis for more polished memoir comics which have become a popular genre of graphic novels in their own right.
In this summer camp, students will create diary-style comics every day as a way of processing thoughts, feelings, and observations about their life and the world. Students will be asked to draw from personal experiences and current events, and encouraged to think of the creative process as an end in itself.
The basics of comic-making will be covered, including layout, penciling, inking, and coloring. Story creation will also be covered, but with an emphasis on using observations from life. Classes will be broken up by drawing exercises that are intended to both build basic drawing skills and keep us energized.
For the last half hour of class, Alex will perform a dramatic reading of a graphic novel from our reading list, which helps demonstrate techniques we are learning in class. Students will have the option to continue to work and ask questions during this time.
